Brown Rice Protein (Protein Blend)
A vegetarian protein as opposed to the common whey and soy protein (hence the Vegan in the tropical strawberry shake). Has a distinct taste and the flavor is not easily masked.
Rice protein is commonly mixed with pea protein powder. Rice protein is high in the sulfur-containing amino acids, cysteine and methionine, but low in lysine. Pea protein, on the other hand, is low in cysteine and methionine but high in lysine. Thus, the combination of rice and pea protein offer a superior amino acid profile that is comparable to dairy or egg proteins, but without the potential for allergies or intestinal issues that some users have with those proteins. Moreover, the light, fluffy texture of pea protein tends to smooth out the strong, chalky flavor of rice protein.
Amino Acids: In the form of proteins, amino acids comprise the second largest component (after water) of human muscles, cells and other tissues. Outside proteins, amino acids perform critical roles in processes such as neurotransmitter transport and biosynthesis.
Pea Protein (Protein Blend)
Neutral taste vegetarian protein. Meant to be an alternative to dairy product proteins. See Brown Rice Protein above for amino acids in pea protein.
Coconut Flower Nectar
Not part of the superfood blends, because it's purpose is a sweetener. Something has got to make it taste good, and it can't be SUGAR! Probably high on the ingredient list to make the shakeology product barable. Despite the comments below, don't see this really adding a ton to the shake other than flavor. Even the bottle says, not a significant source for vitamins, calories, etc.
It is a low glycemic sweetener that is more nutritious than agave. The naturally sweet, mild flavor of Coconut Nectar is an ideal sweetener for use on pancakes, over cereal, in tea and in all your favorite dessert recipes. Coconut Nectar comes from the coconut tree's nutrient-rich "sap" that exudes from the coconut blossoms. Coconut Nectar is a source of minerals, 17 amino acids, vitamin C, broad-spectrum B vitamins, and has a nearly neutral pH.
Plant native to Asia. Been used for thousands of years for all kinds of purposes including flours, jellies, medicinal purposes... Looks like its main purpose within the shake is to promote weight loss. I think I'd rather just eat beans. :)
Konjac has almost no calories, but is very high in fiber. Thus, it is often used as a diet food. The dietary fiber from the root of Amorphophallus konjac is used as a component of weight loss supplements.
Maca Root (Adaptogen Blend)
The Maca Root comes from Peru, and is a relative to the radish plant. Its root has been used to make medicine. Meant to increase energy levels, boost immune system, and hormonal balance.
Maca is used for “tired blood” (anemia); chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS); and enhancing energy, stamina, athletic performance, memory, and fertility. Women use maca for female hormone imbalance, menstrual problems, and symptoms of menopause. Maca is also used for weak bones (osteoporosis), depression, stomach cancer, leukemia, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, erectile dysfunction (ED), to arouse sexual desire, and to boost the immune system.
Maca root contains many chemicals, including fatty acids and amino acids. However, there isn't enough information to know how maca might work.
Chia (Protein Blend)
Medical herb from Central America, part of the mint family. Popular for its omega-3 fatty acids.
It is grown mainly for its seed, which is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids.
According to the USDA, a one ounce (28 gram) serving of chia seeds contains 9 grams of fat, 5 milligrams of sodium, 11 grams of dietary fiber and 4 grams of protein. The seeds also have 18% of the recommended daily intake of calcium, 27% phosphorus and 30% manganese, similar in nutrient content to other edible seeds such as flax or sesame. Although preliminary research indicates potential for dietary health benefits, this work remains sparse and inconclusive.
Yakon root (Digestive Enzyme Blend)
Grown in South America for sweet tasting roots.
These edible tubers contain fructooligosaccharides, an indigestible polysaccharide made up of fructose. Fructooligosaccharides taste sweet, but pass the human digestive tract unmetabolised and hence have very low caloric value. Moreover, fructooligosaccharides have prebiotic effect, meaning that they are used by "friendly" bacteria that favor colon health and digestion.
It's a strawberry. Tastes good.
One cup (236 g) of strawberries contains approximately 45 kilo-calories (188 kJ) and is an excellent source of vitamin C and flavonoids.
This fruit is very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. It is also a good source of folate and potassium, and a very good source of dietary fiber, and manganese One serving of about eight strawberries provides more vitamin C than an orange. The strawberry is among the top 20 fruits in antioxidant capacity.
Beet Juice Powder
Good for stamina and exercise, good for your heart, and good for your blood.
Most lists of nutritious super foods don't include beet juice, but according to recent research it belongs right up there with salmon and blueberries. Beet juice deserves a spot on the list because it may boost stamina to help you exercise longer, improve blood flood, and reduce blood pressure.
Emerging studies suggest that beet juice (also known as beetroot juice) is one of the richest dietary sources of antioxidants and nitrates that may improve blood pressure and blood flow throughout the body, including the brain, heart, muscles, and more.
Role of Dietary Nitrates Like most fruits and vegetables, beets contain nitrates and antioxidants that can have a beneficial effect on health.
Beet juice research is in its infancy, says Wake Forest researcher Gary Miller, PhD. “We are starting to unravel the intriguing health benefits of beet juice primarily because of dietary nitrates and its impact on blood flow and blood pressure," Miller says.
Through a chain reaction, the body converts the nitrates in beet juice into nitric oxide, a compound that enhances blood flow throughout the body and helps lower blood pressure.
